Your theme song is the rhythm in which you move through life. It is the inner beat or harmony that energizes you. Your theme song is the music that happens inside your being that only you can hear and feel. It can be so subtle that you’ve never or hardly notice it. Other times, the volume seems to be turned up all the way to where you notice the music every moment.
My husband has a unique talent. As he listens to music on the radio, he can name the year, place, and time in his life when each particular song came out or was popular. If you ever go for a car ride with him, you’d hear him say something similar to, “1974, forth grade, Gomer Elementary!” as each song begins on the radio.
Identifying your theme song is quite different than being able to recall the time and place in your life when a song was popular. When I hear certain songs on the radio, like Van Halen’s “Higher” or “Philadelphia Freedom” by Elton John, I’m reminded of periods in my life where that song guided or influenced me. Your theme song is music that you carry with you in such a way that it can energize and drive you to live big, dream big, take in all the goodness around you, and it can even help get you through difficult times.
Sometimes the theme songs we carry with us can be quite the opposite as well. They can cause feelings that deflate our hopes and dreams. They can bring us down creating feelings of confusion, frustration, and sadness. I’ve carried this type of theme song too, but once I realized it was quietly playing inside, I replaced the song with music that really moved me forward.
Don’t underestimate the power of your theme song. It can open your eyes and ears to a world of hope and opportunity or it can create feelings of gloom. The good news is that once you become aware of your theme song, you can begin to choose the play list!
Coaching inquiries: Listen quietly, what rhythm are you moving to? What’s playing on your inner radio? How does your theme song move you?
